Analysis of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S Eliot

Responce to Blog Prompt #1

I believe that the the poem was neither a marriage proposal nor a a sexual proposition. I can understand why it can be seen this way. The poem startsout with "cheap hotels" and old dirty restaurants, but nearing the end of the poem it leans toward in-decision. He might be telling the reader that his living conditions and his physical apearance is causing him to stay quiet about his love. Prufrock is stating his low self-esteem because of loves that he has had in the past. Fro example " Do I dare" is repeated and clearly shows hesitation from his part because of his past.

Prufrock is simply afraid forcing something to happen. He may believe in destiny, that if things don't happen they weren't meant to be. Hollis says that Prufrock does not act on his desires because of his self doubt. This is true because Prufrock has a low self esteem. In the poem Prufrock is described an older man who is begining to bald. Knowing that his physical appearence won't help him out, Prufrock decides not to act. He decides not to "disturb the universe". Waldoff's essay argues that Prufrock is not forcing the issue because of his experiances with rejection.

In Class Blog Post

1) The most difficult part of the Literary Analysis paper was how we had to pull certain aspects of a poem and analyze it. This was my first time doing an Literary Anylysis so I really didn't know what to expect. The dificult part about analyzing the poem was trying to figure out the message the author was trying to convey. At times I found that a phrase the author used had a double meaning. Overall I thought this assignment was great because the reader could go inside the poem and explore the true meaning.

2)I am expecting a little more difficuly with the Comparative Analysis paper because we have to look at two poems instead of one. But after todays class discussion I learned that we do not have to touch everything in each of the peoms, something I did in the Lit Analysis.

3) I will overcome the difficulty by actually saving my work on my computer instead of my flash drive, so it won't be corrupted and have to do it all over again. I will also start ahead of time so that I can understand both poems and make a good comparison. Hopefully I will do a good job on this assignment.
